The United States of America: A Nation Divided

How did we get to this?

In the 2016 presidential election, America’s divisions were laid bare for all to see as Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton went head-to-head in the most hotly contested race in modern history.

Trump won over voters on the back of his populist agenda to Make America Great Again, which focused on restoring traditional family values and bringing jobs back from overseas factories to American workers, who had suffered during the recession.

After his win, he announced that he would ban Muslim immigration to America and build a wall along the Mexican border, an action which has provoked protests around the country. Now Joe Biden is in office, is it any better?

We do not agree on politics

We are a nation divided. Politically, socially, and religiously. We are so different from one another that it can be hard to see the commonalities we have and make those the foundation for our work together.

The truth is, we all live in this country together, and while that doesn’t make everyone’s experience the same, it does mean that if you want to keep this country what it has been for more than two centuries, a beacon of liberty and democracy. Then you will have to fight for your vision with the rest of us who want what you want.

We do not agree on religion

As can be seen by the separation between Christianity and Islam, the nation is plagued with religious disputes. It’s not just the Muslims and Christians, but those people who identify as Jews are also divided into their faiths.

They either identify as Reform, Conservative, or Orthodox Jews. For atheists, they are either defined as being an atheist or agnostic. There are also many different types of Protestants and Catholics.

We do not agree on race

It’s really hard to believe that this is still an issue in today’s society. We used to have so much racial unity when I was younger and it seemed like we had achieved this long-awaited utopia with equal rights for all, but apparently not. It sucks that we are still dealing with issues as major as racial discrimination and mistreatment even though it doesn’t make any sense.

What is even worse is that it seems the problems are going deeper than we ever realized because instead of getting better, they seem to be going the other way. We never should have let this happen to our nation where there is blatant racism on a daily basis.

This is what happens when we remain silent

In the upcoming elections, we will be faced with an important decision: to speak up and create a voice for our fellow citizens, or to stay silent and let the president or Congress speak for us. I have chosen to stand up and have my voice heard in this country by voting.

I am not here because I am special; I am here because each one of us has the power to make things better for ourselves, our families, and our country.

Voting is the way that you can choose your elected officials, whether by voting for them or voting against them. I believe that there is a huge silent majority in this country right now because they are afraid to speak up. The reasons are clear, they are scared of being canceled, fired, or even worse. It should not be this way in America.

Is it any better today?

This is a question every American has been asking since Donald Trump was elected president. There are many reasons to believe that the country is becoming more divided under Trump’s administration and others who feel it’s just as divided, if not more so.

The great hope for this nation being able to come together and heal its divisions through Joe Biden. He said in his speech on the day he was sworn in, that he was not going to be President for the red states or the blue states, he would be President of the United States.

Did he live up to that promise? In my opinion, NO! After watching his speech on September 1st, 2022 in Philadelphia I was horrified. Let me start by stating I did not vote for Trump so this is not what it’s about. As an American I could not believe for the first time in history a President called more than 75 million people semi-fascists.

He never once in the entire speech talked about what everyday citizens care about like, Inflation, Gas Prices, Crime Rates, Energy Costs, Food Costs and Shortages, the open border, or Fentanyl deaths killing Americans daily. I think he divided the nation even more.

Final Thoughts

Right now, it’s a difficult time to be an American. With more and more wealth and power concentrated in the hands of a few while the rest live in poverty. With communities segregated by race and economic class, we find ourselves with little hope for a better future.

But I still have faith that there is a way forward to create a society where all voices are heard and people from all walks of life have an opportunity to succeed if they work hard enough for it.

This country was founded on an idea — “freedom for all” — let’s not forget that it’s this message which allowed us to stand up against tyranny in so many parts of the world over these last 241 years as we created democracy not just at home but also abroad. Just my opinion.
