With the coming midterm elections of 2022, Americans across the country are preparing to cast their ballots in an election that will determine which parties will lead them in the next half-decade or so. But what issues should voters be focusing on? What matters to Americans? Here are some of the top issues we predict matter most to American voters in the midterm elections of 2022.

Education Reform

Education is one of the most important issues for many Americans. On average, American students spend more time in school than their counterparts in other countries and still have a lower graduation rate.

Moreover, there are significant differences in achievement between various demographic groups, which means that a child’s future may be determined by where they grow up or what their parents’ job is. As such, education reform should be a priority for any president who wants to help make America great again.

One of the best ways to do so would be to focus on early childhood education, as this has been shown to have lifelong benefits for children and society as a whole.

Health Care Reform

Health care is one of the most important issues in America and it is a major reason why Democrats are currently favored to win the midterm elections. Health care was a key issue in the 2020 presidential election and remains so today.

Democrats have made clear they will make health care reform a top priority if they regain control of Congress this November. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) has been under attack by Republicans since its inception and it remains unclear what, if any, protections it will provide for those with pre-existing conditions as early as 2020.

Government Spending, Deficit, and Debt

In the past, the government has spent more money than what it had in its coffers. This has led to a deficit, which is a situation where the government spends more than it brings in. Deficit spending can help stimulate economic growth for the country and can be used to get out of an economic recession.

However, after some time, there will be consequences for this type of spending. One consequence is that debt rises because there are now more people who owe money to the government and thus, less money available for others who would like loans from banks or other lending institutions.

Social Security

Many Americans are out of work, and those that are employed are often struggling to make ends meet. For example, a person making the national average income of $48,640 per year would be eligible for just $1,066 from Social Security if they retired today.

For many families who depend on two breadwinners to survive and can’t afford to retire early, this will mean financial disaster. As a result, Congress must take action now to keep Social Security solvent for future generations.

Inflation

Voters are concerned about inflation in the 2022 midterms. This is due to the recent state of rising prices in some states. Residents are becoming more and more frustrated with higher-than-usual prices for goods such as food, gas, and other necessary items. Many individuals blame this on the recent trade war with China, which has caused imports to rise in price due to the tariffs placed on them by our country.

Voters are also worried about how this will affect future generations who will be saddled with these mounting debts from the government that they didn’t create themselves. With higher unemployment rates and lower wages, many people feel as if inflation is only going to get worse before it gets better.

Immigration Reform

Leading up to the 2020s, public opinion became increasingly divided on how to reform immigration. A majority of people supported a path to citizenship for immigrants who came here as children, but a significant number also wanted to remove certain benefits for all immigrants.

As the 2020s progressed, a bipartisan Congress developed an agreement that would provide a pathway to citizenship for DACA recipients and other eligible young people who immigrated illegally, as well as restrict legal immigration to address backlogs and family-based visas. This compromise was enough to get both Democrats and Republicans on board with the bill.

Environment

A study by the University of Michigan revealed that 47% of adults in America believe that protecting the environment is a top priority. The number one environmental concern for them is climate change, followed by air pollution and water pollution. These are all valid concerns, as they have been linked to serious illnesses like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Air pollution has also been tied to an increase in the risk of heart attacks, strokes, lung cancer, and other health conditions. It’s important to take care of our planet so these diseases can be prevented.

Gun Control

We should note that some states have already made significant strides in curbing gun violence through legislation. For example, Illinois enacted a Concealed Carry Act which limits concealed weapons to licensed residents only as well as any person with a valid concealed carry permit from another state. Similarly, California passed the Firearm Violence Prevention Act of 2016, prohibiting the possession of ammunition magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds.

Crime

Voters are concerned with crime in the 2022 midterms. There has been a startling increase in violent crime over the last five years, which disproportionately affects communities of color. Violent crime is defined as a broad category that includes murder, manslaughter, robbery, assault, and rape.

It is important to note that homicides are included in this statistic but not suicides or accidental deaths. As a result of this crime surge, many people feel unsafe walking around their neighborhoods at night and worry about their children’s safety during the day.

Final Thoughts

Americans will vote in the midterm elections in November of 2022. These elections are significant, as they’ll determine the makeup of Congress and decide which party will lead the country for the next two years. As we wait to see how these elections unfold, it’s important to note that there are three big issues on people’s minds: inflation, immigration, and crime. Get out and vote!
