The Importance Of Human Needs
Human Needs and Their Satisfaction
Despite our differences, we all have the same six basic human needs. These needs must be met, or we will be unhappy where we are, with our lives, and ultimately with ourselves. Each of these six needs has a strong influence on your behavior and even the type of success you achieve in life.
Security
The need for security is the first and most basic human need. This need can manifest as a desire for financial security, physical security, or emotional security. People always seek a minimum level of security in their lives before fulfilling any other need.
If you were being chased by a tiger, your first priority would be to find safety. You would then consider other things, such as where to eat. Assuming you weren’t eaten first.
The level of security we accept varies, but in general, people prioritize obtaining a minimum level of security (such as finding a place to live) before addressing other needs. Later on, this need may be revisited, and greater security may be sought.
Comfort
After you’ve established an acceptable level of security in your life, the next natural human need is comfort. So, now that you have a place to live, you’ll want to decorate and furnish it. So that it is a pleasant place to live.
People like to feel comfortable, so the desire for comfort can be a very powerful motivator of human behavior. This need, however, always arises after you have felt secure in your current location.
Leisure
Your next need is for leisure once you have achieved an acceptable level of security and comfort. People place a high value on leisure time, and their behavior is strongly motivated to achieve it. Leisure, on the other hand, is a two-edged sword.
People who place an excessive value on leisure may fail to meet other needs, such as becoming lazy and lacking ambition. People may become overly productive to enjoy leisure activities, such as going on vacation.
Love
Love is one of the most powerful human needs, and it can motivate people to do anything. We all value love and will go to any length to obtain it. We feel lonely and our self-esteem suffers when we lack love.
Respect
Everyone wishes to be regarded by others. As children, we frequently do things to impress our peers to gain their respect, and as adults, we do the same, albeit in different ways. Respect makes a person feel valuable and important. Without respect, you will doubt your own worth and significance as a person.
Purpose
You will lack direction and meaning in life if you do not have a purpose. Purpose is something you believe you were put on this earth to accomplish. It is the reason you exist and what you strive for.
Many people struggle to find their true purpose in life, but for those who do, there may be no greater human need that inspires and motivates behavior.
The Importance of Human Needs
As can be seen, everyone has the same basic human needs. However, we all choose different ways to meet those needs. Some people may be content with simply having security, comfort, and leisure. While others strive to meet all of their needs.
Those who choose to meet only a few needs usually find a lot of fulfillment in one area of their lives, such as comfort. However, this is hampered by a lack of fulfillment in other areas of their lives, such as security.
For example, if all you care about is comfort and don’t bother looking for work, your security will be jeopardized because you won’t be able to pay your bills. To experience true fulfillment and satisfaction in life, it is necessary to work on meeting all of your basic needs.
