My name is Duane, and I used to be an alcoholic. I drank every day, and my life was spiraling out of control. My relationships were suffering, my work was slipping, and I knew I needed to make a change. Overcoming alcohol addiction was not easy, but it was one of the best decisions I ever made. In this article, I will share my personal experience with alcohol addiction and provide tips and resources for those who may be struggling with similar issues.

My Struggle with Alcohol Addiction

I started drinking in high school just to be cool and make friends. Then, what started as occasional weekend binge-drinking quickly turned into a daily habit after graduation. I relied on alcohol to cope with stress, anxiety, and depression.

Alcohol became a crutch that I couldn’t live without. I didn’t realize I had a problem until my friends and family started expressing concern. I tried to quit on my own, but I always found myself going back to the bottle. It wasn’t until I hit rock bottom that I knew I needed help.

As I slowly watched my friends get older, married and have children, I remained the same party animal refusing to grow up. Having too much fun doing what I wanted and never growing up. Soon realized time had flown by and I was now 50 years old, single and no children.

Seeking Help

I reached out to a healthcare professional and was connected with a counselor who specialized in addiction. This was a turning point for me. I realized that I was not alone in my struggle and that there were resources available to help me. Through counseling, I was able to understand the root causes of my addiction and develop coping mechanisms to deal with them.

Depression was taking over in my mind as I finally realized all my friends had moved on in life and here I was still the same as in high school. Life had passed me by due to drinking and partying for decades.

Treatment Options

In addition to counseling, I also tried medication-assisted treatment. My doctor prescribed me acamprosate, which helped reduce my cravings and made it easier to stay sober. I also attended support groups, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, where I found a sense of community and understanding.

Life After Recovery

It has been several years since I overcame my alcohol addiction, and my life has changed dramatically for the better. Here are some of the benefits of being alcohol-free that I’ve experienced:

Improved Physical Health

Alcohol can take a toll on the body, leading to liver disease, heart problems, and a weakened immune system. Since becoming sober, my overall health has improved. I have more energy, my skin looks better, and I’ve lost weight. Drinking gave me a fatty liver, which I am now be treated for.

Better Mental Health

Alcohol is a depressant, and it can exacerbate anxiety and depression. Since giving up alcohol, I’ve noticed that my mood is more stable, and I’m able to manage stress and difficult emotions more effectively. I no longer sit around dwelling on the past.

Improved Relationships

Alcohol can strain relationships with loved ones, leading to arguments and misunderstandings. Since becoming sober, I’ve been able to repair relationships that were damaged by my addiction and build stronger, healthier connections. Also have made new sober friends that are fantastic.

Increased Productivity

Alcohol can interfere with work and other responsibilities. Since becoming sober, I’ve been able to focus more on my career and pursue new opportunities. I no longer go from job to job and have been steadily employed for 11 years in my career.

A Sense of Freedom

Alcohol can be all-consuming, and the constant need to drink can feel like a burden. Being alcohol-free has given me a sense of freedom and control over my life that I didn’t have before. It is a fantastic feeling not being reliant on alcohol to function. The world has become more clear around me.

Conclusion

Overcoming alcohol addiction is not easy, but it is possible. If you or someone you know is struggling with alcohol addiction, know that there is help available. Seek out a healthcare professional, connect with support groups, and take it one day at a time. Recovery is a journey, but it is a journey that is well worth taking.

I feel so much better after getting this off my chest and hopefully my struggles can help someone else. It is like a massive burden has been lifted and I have a brand new life that after 35 years of alcoholism. One day at a time is all you need.
