When it comes to matters of global destruction, there’s no subject more terrifying than nuclear warfare. We live in an age where countries can destroy the entire world in the blink of an eye with atomic weapons, and it’s not hard to find doomsday scenarios about how this could happen.

If you’re concerned about the possibility of nuclear Armageddon, you should know what the experts are saying about this topic right now and how you can protect yourself and your family from the worst-case scenarios. Read on to learn more!

Why Is North Korea So Mad at the World

North Korea isn’t just mad, it’s scared. Since 1997, according to Pyongyang’s official news agency KCNA, the situation of the Korean peninsula has entered an extremely grave phase. In response to perceived threats from abroad, particularly from South Korea and its U.S. allies.

The nation has spent much of that time developing nuclear weapons and making dire threats about using them. In 2013 alone, North Korea threatened to turn Seoul into a Sea of Fire and lob missiles at Japan in a speech by leader Kim Jong Un.

On September 3, 2017, North Korea said that plans were in place for a missile strike on Guam; Pyongyang later walked back its threat after President Donald Trump issued his warnings against any such move by North Korea

Are Putin’s Threats Serious?

Nobody can say for sure if Putin’s threats are serious. It is certainly possible that his massive nuclear exercise (which involved deploying weapons to Kaliningrad, a Russian enclave between Poland and Lithuania) was meant to send a message, not just to the United States, but also to Western Europe.

As pro-Russian separatists wage an insurgency in Eastern Ukraine, it wouldn’t be surprising if he wanted NATO on edge. If Russia did use tactical nuclear weapons against NATO forces, it would be a horrific event that would certainly destroy much of central Europe. Despite what popular culture would have us believe, however, such an attack probably wouldn’t exterminate all of humanity.

How Far Can Russian Nukes Reach?

Russia’s nuclear weapons arsenal is currently composed of about 7,000 nuclear warheads, 2,000 of which are active. Of these, 1,710 strategic warheads are deployed on 485 land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), 645 submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs), and 113 heavy bombers.

As part of a modernization effort begun in 2008 and expected to be complete by 2020, Russia has developed a new road-mobile ICBM called Yars (which replaces both SS-25 and RS-24) and a new SLBM called Bulava (replacing RSM-50). Russia also has plans to develop at least two more ICBM systems by 2018.

How Much Damage Would a Nuclear Bomb Do?

The reason we haven’t seen an all-out nuclear war between nations is that these weapons are incredibly destructive. A single one could instantly kill tens of thousands of people and injure countless more, leaving behind massive destruction in its wake.

It’s estimated that a 10-kiloton bomb detonated over New York City would kill more than 2 million people and injure another 1.8 million. A global thermonuclear war, on the other hand, would result in catastrophic consequences for life on Earth as we know it — an estimated 97 percent of all humans who have ever lived would perish.

How Many Other Countries Have Nukes

Nine countries in total officially own and operate nuclear weapons. These countries include China, India, Israel, Pakistan, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, the United States, and North Korea.

In addition to these nuclear-capable nations are three other countries — Iran, Syria, and Ukraine that have programs that could lead to a nuclear weapon being detonated at some point in their respective futures. Each of these 11 countries has thousands of deployed warheads that represent a significant threat to humanity’s survival if they were ever used in anger.

How Can We Achieve Peace in the World?

The simple answer to how we can achieve peace in a world fraught with war and conflict is by creating a culture of peace through education. To create and sustain long-term peace, we have to break down all of the misconceptions about what it means to be peaceful.

People need to learn that peace is not achieved by just not fighting or competing, but rather by fostering compassionate behavior and positive relations with others. Individuals, corporations, and nations must actively work together toward peace if we are ever going to achieve it on a large scale.

Final Thoughts

One of humanity’s worst fears is a nuclear war. With advancements in technology and more countries developing their nukes, many people fear that World War III could break out at any moment. But is that fear justified or do we just have to worry about North Korea launching another missile test over Japan or Iran rattling its saber at Israel again? Can’t we all just get along?
