Innovation Is A State Of Mind

Innovators work on what they’re passionate about because they love what they do and that’s how change is made.

You’re probably familiar with the myth that innovation is characterized by an unpredicted, sudden flash of insight. There is some truth to the stories we read about an inventor or innovator having an “aha” moment or the light bulb going off in their head.

Einstein genuinely experienced epiphanies while shaving in the morning. He wasn’t, however, thinking of new kitchen appliances or movie plots; instead, he was working on the specific issues he had insight into.

In other words, despite how “sudden” the initial ideas may have seemed, Einstein’s innovations were the result of ongoing mental effort. Innovative people only have “sudden” new ideas because they have habitually worked and thought in certain ways for some time.

It is similar to a singer who practices his craft for ten years before becoming an “overnight success.” Why not start developing those thought patterns if you want to think creatively?

Mental Habits Lead To Innovation

Opportunities can come from problems. Although the word “problem” often carries negative connotations, such as being annoying or stressful, any problem can inspire an invention that enhances our quality of life. Lack of knowledge of the time led to the development of wristwatch-sized clocks. Sanitary sewer systems are a result of nasty diseases. Begin to see the opportunity in every challenge.

Innovation could come from something as simple as a lack of storage space. You could create a brand-new design for an outdoor storage unit, or you could simply install a plywood floor in the attic.

The first step

Understanding the fundamentals is the first step in innovation. An innovator’s door does not necessarily need to be made of metal, wood, or glass. Key components include a way to enter and a way to keep others out. Start with these, and before long you’ll be coming up with new ideas for doors.

If your hands are full, you could design a door that opens with your voice. Alternatively, you could design a door that automatically closes and locks when someone else approaches. Consider the essential components of things.

Positivity fosters innovation

Concept combination is a creative technique for solving problems that involve combining two ideas to produce a new idea or item. The most important thing is that you presumptively have a good new idea. Your mind will start working overtime to come up with something once you make that assumption.

It didn’t take long to picture a CD player with headphones that only plays the music properly if a jogger maintains his ideal pace. A shoe and a CD have nothing in common. You’ll frequently discover something when you assume there is something there.

Conclusion

Innovation is helped by playfulness. High IQ does not necessarily correlate with creativity, but when combined with playfulness, you can produce an Einstein. A playful mind is a creative mind.

Recall that in order to develop his theory of relativity, he pretended to be riding on a beam of light. Why not experiment with concepts and objects in both your mind and your environment? Inventing should be enjoyable.
