Impossible Is Just A Word — Never Give Up

Everyone has wished to be someone special, someone important, at some point in their lives. Who hasn’t wished to be the one to hit the game winning home run? Who hasn’t wished to be the homecoming queen?

And how many times have we fantasized about being wealthy, successful or content in our relationships? We frequently have lofty goals and aspirations. Unfortunately, our fantasies remain just that: fantasies. And our dreams tend to collect dust in our attics.

This is a heartbreaking turn of events in our lives. Instead of having exciting adventures in self-actualization, we get caught up in the drudgery of simply existing from day to day.

But guess what? If only we could learn to aim higher, life could be so much better.

The word “impossible” is the most common barrier to goal setting. Most people get hung up on the fact that I can’t do it. It’s too difficult. It’s simply not possible. No one is capable of doing so.

However, if everyone believed this, there would be no inventions, innovations, or breakthroughs in human achievement.

Remember how scientists were perplexed when they first saw the humble bumblebee? They claimed that the bumblebee could not fly in theory. Unfortunately for the bumble, no one has informed it of this. So far, so good.

On the other hand, some people suffer from having completely outlandish dreams and failing to act on them. As a result, dreams are shattered and aspirations are shattered.

You will never be able to break through what you consider impossible if you limit yourself with self-doubt and self-limiting assumptions. If you reach too far into the sky without working toward your goal, you will end up clinging to an impossible dream.

Try out this activity. Take a piece of paper and jot down some life goals. Make a list of things you know you can do under one heading. Write the things you might be able to do under another heading. List the things that are impossible for you to do under another heading.

Now, look at all of the headers and strive every day to achieve the goals listed under things you know you can do. When you are able to complete them, check them off your list. As you gradually check off all of your goals under that heading, try checking off the goals under the other header, the one that says you might be able to do.

As the items on your list of things I could do are completed, you can move the goals on your list of things you might be able to do to the list of things you might be able to do.

As you iterate through this process, you will discover that previously insurmountable goals become more achievable. And the seemingly impossible begins to appear possible after all.

The technique here is to not limit your imagination. It is to set a lofty goal and then gradually work toward it. It is, however, unwise to set a goal that is completely unrealistic.

Those who only dream about achieving a goal without putting in the effort will be disappointed and disillusioned.

On the other hand, if you told someone a century ago that man could walk on the moon, they would laugh at you. If you told them you could send mail from here to the other side of the world in a matter of seconds, they would think you were insane. But, through sheer determination and perseverance, these seemingly impossible dreams have become a reality.

Thomas Edison once said that genius is 1% inspiration and 95% perspiration. Nothing could be more accurate. Work and discipline are required for one to achieve his or her goals. But keep in mind that that 1% has to be a big dream, not something that can be accomplished easily.

Any gym rat will tell you that there can be no gains unless you force yourself out of your comfort zone. Remember the old adage, “No pain, no gain?” That is as accurate as it gets.

So go ahead and fantasize, friend! Don’t get bogged down by your perceived limitations. Think big and work hard to achieve your goals. As you move up the progression ladder, you will notice that the impossible has become a little bit more possible.
