By launching a new income sharing mechanism for Shorts creators, YouTube is poised to transform the short-form video industry. Beginning on February 1, creators will be able to make money from the commercials seen in-between videos in the Shorts feed, putting pressure on competing services like TikTok.

YouTube is implementing new terms for all creators in the YouTube Partner Program in advance of the change. To continue in the program and have access to the new revenue sharing model, creators must accept the new conditions by July 10th. The updated conditions contain specific monetization modules, such the “Watch Page Monetization Module” and the “Shorts Monetization Module,” which will let creators monetize their long-form films and Shorts with advertisements.

The revenue sharing mechanism does have some complexity, though. Each month, the money collected from the commercials that run in between the Shorts will be tallied up and used to pay creators for their work as well as to pay for music licensing. According on views and music usage across all watched Shorts, a share of the overall earnings will be distributed to the creative pool.

Following that, money from the creator pool will be distributed to creators depending on their percentage of all Shorts views. For instance, a creator would receive 5% of the money from the creator pool if they received 5% of the eligible views across all the Shorts published by monetized artists. 45% of the revenue allotted to creators for shorts will go to them.

Conclusion

It should be noted that revenue sharing is not available for non-original Shorts, and that fraudulent or artificial views are likewise disqualified. In the short-form video market, YouTube Shorts is set to grow significantly as a result of these planned changes, which may encourage producers to produce original material for the service rather than for competitors like TikTok.
